The chosen home of the authentic rural Romanian civilization.
In the north of Transylvania, Maramures region is the chosen home of the authentic rural Romanian civilization.
A visit during Christmas or Easter in Maramures is like travelling in time. Over one hundred wooden churches - eight of which are UNESCO monuments - are the testimony of their traditional craftsmanship in carpentry and church painting. With its serene, rural perspective on death, the Merry Cemeter of Sapânta is close to the Sighet Prison Memorial remembering the victims of the Communist repression and to the Elie Wiesel Memorial House commemorating the infamous 1944 deportation of the Jewish population to Nazi camps.
Isolated by the mountains, Maramures region was less affected by the Communist aggression and the madness of the forced collectivization, therefore it has better preserved old crafts, customs and traditions, and a strong religious devotion.
