Carta Abbey – Cistercians’ easternmost outpost in Europe
An Evangelical parish nowadays, the Carta Abbey was built around 1200 by Burgundian Cistercian monks.
Close to Transylvanian Făgăraș Mountains, Cârța Abbey has been the easternmost Cistercian monastery in Europe. Renowned during the Middle Ages as the ”White Monks”, the Cistecians were disciples of Saint Bernard of Clairvaux (1090-1153) who decided to return to a strict following of the Rule of Saint Benedict of Nursia (480-550) – ”Orare and Labora” – Pray and Work.
