Built in 1532 by Petru Rares, the son of the famous Moldavian prince Stephen the Great, the church of the Orthodox convent of Moldovita is among the eight Romanian painted churches included on UNESCO World Heritage list.
The wood piece is a semantron. Monks and nuns use it to call people to church before a liturgical service. All those in the monastery or the convent and nearby would know that a church service is going to start.
