Spending Easter in a village of Maramures (nort-west of Romania) is like travelling back in time. You are going to see crowded churches, the strong faith being shared by old and young alike.
You are going also to rediscover old traditions. You meet men and women, girls and boys dressed in traditional costumes, some of them handed over from their grandparents. And they dress these hand-woven cloths in the most natural way possible, because, for them, that is the proper way to celebrate the Day of our Lord. They do not dress like this for a "folk moment". The peasants of Maramures do not want to be living exhibits representing a past gone by, but to show off what is most precious and beautiful for them.
This year, on 15th and 16th of April 2023, we spent Easter in the villages of Șurdești (going to the Sunday Holly Mass at the wooden church of this village, which is also on the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list) and in the village of Breb - which we consider
a magical place for holidays in Romania.
