Bordered to the south by the Fagaras Mountains - the Alps of Transylvania which are crossed by the spectacular Transfagarasan alpine road, to the west - by the Apuseni Mountains, and to the east - by Harghita Mountains, Transylvania appears to us as a huge plateau dominated by large pastures, well defended by the mountains who stand guard.
Close to the Transfăgărășan mountain road, at 1h30'-2h from Bâlea Lake and hut, Buteanu is the most accessible peak over 2,500 m in the Făgăraș mountains.
Bucegi Mountains display a large, massive plateau at over 2,000 meters altitude, with strange rock formations, guarded by abrupt cliffs and surrounded by Prahovei Valley resorts of Sinaia, Busteni, Azuga, Predeal.
Transfagarasan was planned by dictator Ceausescu after the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia. Jeremy Clarkson called it "the best road in the world" in 2009.
